The Power of a Cool Jacket
September is here.
Fall is right around the corner. Summer is just beginning to slowly slipping away. I’m starting to notice the sun goes down earlier and earlier every day. Shorts start to feel like a mistake. Pants are on every day now. That means soon it will be Jacket weather. While we all love summer, the good news is that everyone looks and feels cooler wearing a jacket.

Even statues look better with jackets.
But fall isn’t here yet. You may need a garment that can handle the in-between time period. A piece that works when the season’s still finding its footing. A transition jacket. If your style is mainly casual, try a shirt jacket. It’s that piece of garment that’s not quite a shirt but also not quite a jacket—something in the middle. Perfect for late summer/early fall.
But when fall season fully hits, you’ll want to be ready with a jacket. The real thing. Something that delivers both style and confidence. A cool jacket.
A cool jacket isn’t just about staying warm—it’s about the psychological edge, the aesthetic boost. It changes how you feel, how you look, how the world sees you.
The Jacket Transforms The Man
Jackets are pretty much the last stand for straight men’s fashion. The jacket has taken over where the power suit left off. Really it’s all we’ve got now. But that’s fine. It works. In an era where men’s fashion can often feel limited or overly experimental, the jacket remains a reliable and adaptable option. It offers the wearer a way to express personal style without straying too far from traditional masculine ideals
Jensen Huang, the CEO of NVIDIA, exemplifies how the jacket has become the modern man’s power symbol.
The way that Jensen Huang runs Nvidia is wild: 40 direct reports. No 1:1s. No formal planning cycles. And no status reports.
In a recent interview, he went in-depth on his Leadership style. Every entrepreneur must understand why it works:

This isn’t new; people have known this for ages. The importance of a coat to a man is in the book of Genesis in the Bible. Joseph, the son of Jacob (also known as Israel), is given a special coat by his father. The coat sets Joseph apart from his brothers, indicating his favored status, which eventually leads to their jealousy and the subsequent events of the story, including Joseph being sold into slavery.
This is discussed in pop culture. Like in Seinfeld. Jerry had the jacket of confidence, the one that made you feel like you could handle anything life threw at you. “This jacket has completely changed my life,” he says. And you believe it, because that’s what a great jacket does.
1) The Technical Details of the Jacket: Let’s break down the technical details of what wearing a jacket really does. It’s all about layering, giving your outfit structure, adding texture, and creating focal points.
2) The Jacket Tells A Story. Jackets are not just about their function; they are also powerful statements of identity. They are the last refuge of masculinity in the fashion world. A man’s jacket is supposed to tell you a story about his life.
The Technical Details of the Jacket
There’s a few reasons why wearing a cool jacket is important for a man. For one reason it can great a visual contrast that breaks up the monotony in an outfit like this all black outfit topped with a brown coat.
But there are other things you need to consider before buying a jacket. Here are three characteristics of a cool jacket.
1) Layering
2) Texture
3) Silhouette
Layering
When we say that the average person was better dressed in the past, what we are really trying to say that the outfits were more complicated. Clothes have become much more simpler over time. Our modern fashion sense is about removing.
Delon knew that good casual outfits often require a jacket, and clothes that tell a story. Here we see him wearing two workwear outfits involving a Lee Storm Rider and leather motorcycle jacket. Now the outfits have aesthetic direction.

In previous eras, the trend was to add more layers. Make every outfit more complex.
What layering does is create depth and dimensionality. A good layer job just makes you look more interesting. When picking a jacket for layering focus on a fit that is slightly loose and has lots of versatility (goes with jeans, chinos, etc). Like a French chore coat or the M65 American military jacket.
